PLASU Sets New Standard as Media Powerhouse in Central NigeriaBOKKOS, PLATEAU STATE –
In a landmark move to redefine media education in the Middle Belt, the Senate of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, has officially approved the transition of its long-standing Mass Communication department into a comprehensive Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
The expansion, sanctioned during the 97th Regular Senate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Shedrack Gaya Best, marks a strategic shift toward specialized, industry-aligned training.
*Unbundling the Future
While many institutions in the region continue to offer "Mass Communication" as a single, general degree, PLASU is leading the charge by unbundling the curriculum.
Starting in the 2026/2027 academic session, the new faculty will offer a robust suite of specialized B.Sc. programs, including:
B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies
B.Sc. Broadcasting
B.Sc. Digital and Strategic Communication
B.Sc. Development Communication Studies
B.Sc. Mass Communication
This move aligns directly with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), ensuring that PLASU graduates are specialized experts rather than generalists.
*A Comparative Edge
The development places PLASU at the forefront of media education in Central Nigeria. While Nasarawa State University (NSUK) has historically been a strong contender in the field, its current structure remains less integrated as a full faculty compared to the comprehensive, multi-course model PLASU is now deploying. By launching at least five distinct degree-awarding programs simultaneously, PLASU provides a level of academic depth previously unavailable in the region.
Beyond Media: A 19-Program Expansion
The birth of the Media Faculty is part of a broader "New Signature" vision for the university.
The Senate approved a total of 19 new undergraduate programs to meet the growing demand for modern skills. Other highlights of this expansion include the establishment of a Faculty of Computing, offering degrees in:
Data Science
Cybersecurity
Information and Communication Technology
*The Future is Now
According to university leadership, these changes are a response to the "growing number of qualified applicants" and the need for digital-ready professionals. With the recent launch of the university’s own 103.3 FM radio station, students in the new faculty will have immediate access to hands-on clinical experience, bridging the gap between theory and professional airwaves.
For prospective students and media enthusiasts, this marks the beginning of a new era in Bokkos—one where Plateau State University isn't just a participant in the media industry, but its primary architect in Central Nigeria.
